LinkedIn is more than just a networking platform – it’s a necessity for building your personal brand. In this article, we explore why LinkedIn matters for recruiters, and how you can boost your personal brand on the platform.

Think of LinkedIn as your virtual shop window

A shop window provides a first impression – a glimpse of what’s inside. And as any retailer knows, a great shop window can turn a passerby into a customer. It can grab their attention and tempt them through the door.

When people come across you on LinkedIn – or when you reach out to them directly – the first thing they’ll see is your profile and activity. This is your shop window. By carefully curating what they see, you can quickly establish yourself as someone they must connect with. This helps you widen your network, attract great leads, and source amazing candidates.

How to leverage LinkedIn more effectively

Here are our top tips for using LinkedIn like the pro you are:

  • Keep your profile (and picture) up to date. It sounds obvious, but so many people neglect to update their profile regularly.
  • Optimise your profile and posts with industry-specific keywords. This makes it easier for people to discover you.
  • Don’t just list your professional qualifications and experience – showcase your professional personality. For example, when you write a post, write in an engaging, human way, not like a robot.
  • Share insightful, useful content that establishes your role as a thought leader – whether it’s content you’ve written yourself, or other people’s articles that you found interesting.
  • Use a variety of media to make your profile stand out, such as articles, videos, photos, infographics, presentations and case studies.
  • Get endorsements and recommendations. These contribute to the narrative that you’re someone worth doing business with.
  • Show up regularly and be consistent. Respond to messages and comments. Like and comment (thoughtfully) on other people’s posts. Join and participate in relevant groups. Acknowledge people’s professional anniversaries and congratulate them on achievements. Be part of the conversation, basically.
  • Keep working on those connections. Dedicate time each week to seeking out new connections and keeping in touch with existing contacts. Staying top of people’s minds can help you generate new referrals.
